Timeline: Railway History

The invention of the railway can be described as one of the greatest technical revolutions in human history. On the one hand, the railway is sometimes called the engine of industrialisation because it enabled the economic upheaval in the 18th and 19th centuries. On the other hand, the railway also significantly increased people's ability to move around: Before the invention of the railway and its use as a means of transport, most people travelled on foot or horseback; only in the rarest cases was travel by (mail) coach or ship possible. Steam locomotives made long-distance travel possible, comfortable and inexpensive. But what milestones were needed before ICEs could race through the countryside at up to 300 km/h? The Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek takes you on a journey through the history of the railway - welcome aboard!
